Start Earning As a Writer
You’re a blogger. You love to write.
So why not starting earning doing it?
You write. You get earned.
Okay, I’m oversimplifying it.
It’s not that simple, to be honest.
But following the right path, it is doable.
As a beginner here’s the process you can follow to build your profile as a writer:
- Start a Blog. Seriously. This is the one thing that holds many able writers back. Not having a proper platform. A web presence, to showcase your work.
- Start looking for opportunities to publish in major publications in your industry. The Huffington Post, Inc., New York Times, Entrepreneur, Mashable, etc. whatever your target industry, go for it.
- Build networks with other writers on LinkedIn and other social platforms.
- Start with these sites who pay for articles:
(There are many more, in case you’re interested in more such sites, check out this list)
All these sites are widely used in the industry. While you build your portfolio, you can create your profiles and start applying for projects. With the right credentials, you’re certain to get your first writing project and once that happens – and you do it well – the projects will keep on coming.
Check out how much top blog and article writers are getting paid on UpWork:
- Follow Jeff Goins. He’s a PRO when it comes to making a living writing. Do what he says.
Unleash your inner designer
It’s time to unleash your inner designer and start making money.
Here are some renowned websites that you can look at:
- DesignCrowd: A marketplace for all sorts of designs. Take a look at their categories: You can register as a Designer or look for designing jobs.
- Teespring: On TeeSpring, you can design and sell your custom Tee-shirt designs.
Their simple interface makes it very easy to design.
Whether you want to type a quote or upload your art, both can be done within a click of a mouse.
Here’s a simple Tee-shirt I’ve designed. What do you think?
- TheSouledStore: Another similar marketplace, where you can submit your design. And once it gets approved, TheSouledStore will sell products with your design and give you a royalty on a month basis (depending on the number of sales).
- CreativeMarket: Open your shop on CM and get exposed to an audience of 2 million people who’re looking for designs, graphics, photos and much more. You make 70% on every sale.
The practice of building a web presence and a portfolio applies for this too. Showcase you work online, and the chances of getting clients and offers boost significantly.
Start a Freelancing Business
Hey, why just stop at writing or designing?
You can get freelancing jobs for all sorts of things.
Here are some of the categories from Freelancer.com and UpWork.com:
These are just a few categories. There’s lots MORE.
In general, these are some ways you can start finding freelancing opportunities:
- Start looking into Job Boards. One example I’ve already mentioned of DesignCrowd. ProBlogger job board is another place you can look at.
- Freelancing Marketplaces like UpWork and Freelancer will always be around.
- Start connecting and building networks, especially on LinkedIn. You can also do the same on other social platforms.
- Attend local events and conferences and see if you could get some clients.
- Start a Blog.
- Host Webinars (or maybe Seminars).
- Provide free stuff like eBooks, videos & courses.
But before you start implementing these! Check out the other methods to make money online:

See, simple as that.
Okay, you might say “$0.01?”.
Yep. But the tasks are that simple.
It’s not expected to make you rich with this.
But, with no special skill required at all, you could make a couple hours every day but put in an hour or two.
Provide Your Skills as a Service
Let me show you something:
This is from Elna Cain’s blog.
She is a writer.
And she provides the same as a service on her website.
Similarly, you can provide similar sorts of services on your website in whatever you’re good at.
Here are some thought starters to get you thinking:
- Social Media Campaigns
- Website Design
All you got to do is set-up a separate page on your website, and display the details of your services and the best way to contact you.
Speak in local conferences or Host Workshops in colleges
Recently, I got to host a 2-day workshop in my college.
The topic was Website Making and Digital Marketing.
We taught participants, how to pick-up an idea, set-up the website for the same and promote it to attract potential customers.
And, the response was immense:
Many people were interested in setting up their website wanted to talk about their ideas, etc.
We got a couple of great participants with awesome ideas to help them further with setting up their website too!
In general, speaking in conferences, workshops, or other similar events raises your brand awareness and boosts the potential of getting more customers.
Start a Blog

Ask Local Businesses if they want to set-up their website
If you’re a blogger, you’ve already set-up your website.
And you’ve already played around with hosting, WordPress, and all that stuff.

At a reasonable rate, you can help local businesses set-up their sites.

If you feel:
“Why would a local business want to do that?”
Just go and speak with them.
You’d be surprised by the number of positive responses you get.

Build Your Online Store (Or don’t… Check next part)
If you’ve ever wanted to build and sell stuff in a store or something, why not do it ONLINE?
Hell, you can get started for as low as $29 a month.
All you need is a website (& products to sell, obviously).
When it comes to building an online or e-commerce store, two services (or tools whatever you want to call them) come highly recommended: Shopify & WooCommerce.
Shopify is a service through which you can get an entire website set-up (including hosting, domain name) or integrate on your existing WordPress site.
WooCommerce is a free WordPress plugin to effectively do the same.
What both of these services make extremely manageable is the complexity of product listing and payment gateways which could become tedious.
Here’s an in-depth article on setting up your online store:
Create Your Online Store with Shopify or WooCommerce, whatever suits you.
Enter Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA)
Here’s how Amazon FBA works:
So, basically, you’d list your products to Amazon and ship them off to the Amazon warehouses.
Later, when you start getting orders, Amazon will pack and ship them and you get paid.
As simple as that.
Start a Drop Shipping Business
In the Drop Shipping Model, you don’t have to worry about the products you sell.
Neither do you have to worry about packaging and shipping products?
But, what you do is set-up your store and place orders with 3rd party wholesalers and suppliers as they come in.
Drop Shipping is a highly competitive niche.
Here’s the most comprehensive guide on Drop Shipping you’ll ever find.
The First Income source for every Blogger
Hey, if you’re a blogger, what was the first thing that came to your mind when you thought of monetizing your blog?
It was Google’s AdSense, right?
Well, fair enough.
Almost everyone who starts a blog thinks of (or does) getting started with AdSense.
And, Ads could be an okay option to get started.
You can expect to make a couple bucks a month.
Firstly though, you want to know about the types of payment models that these companies use. There’s CPC (Cost per Click) and CPM (Cost per Impressions).
CPC is when someone clicks on one of your Ads you get paid.
CPM is for every time your Ad is displayed to a visitor.
Here are some networks to get started with, alongside Google AdSense:
- Infolinks – Infolinks is a great alternative to AdSense. In fact, you can expect to make decent revenue, provided you have enough traffic too. You get a variety of Ad formats like in text, in fold, in tag, in frame and in screen. The application process is very simple, all you got to do is enter your email and apply, and you can expect to get an email within 48 hours.
Here are some other options you can check out:
- media.net – One of the biggest advertisement networks in the world, powered by Yahoo and Bing.
- Amazon Native Shopping Ads – Did you know Amazon have a native ads platform too? Now you do. Go check out.
How about getting paid to click on Ads?
There are many PTC (paid to click) platforms that pay to you to click on their Ads.
This is obviously NOT a very lucrative option to make money online.
But, still, if you’ve got a couple of minutes every day, you can expect to make a few dollars on a monthly basis.
Here are some proven networks that provide this opportunity:
- Neobux – You’ll get up to $0.01 per click and $0.005 per referral click. Here’s a calculator from Neobux of how much you can make in a year, by spending 5-10 minutes per day:
- Clixsense – You can earn up to $0.02 per click and $0.008 per referral click to view ads, perform small tasks (clicks) and so on.
Other similar sites to check out: GPTPlanet.com, ScarletClicks.com.
Monetize Your Email List
How about you have contacts of people, who’d be interested in the products you want to sell, services you want to offer?
That’s what an email list brings in…
If you run an online business and you’re not yet building an email list, well you’re losing out on a major chunk of revenue.
In fact, Derek Halpern goes on to say:
“If you’re not building an email list, you’re an idiot”
Here’s a massive guide to building an email list:
Recommend Tools and Resources you use
Having an online presence means you use a lot of paid tools. Isn’t that right?
Well, how about recommending stuff you’ve been using to grow your business or maybe social media following?
How about recommending stuff you’ve built your website on?
How about recommending just about everything that has helped your business grow?
And making money to do it.
To coin a term, it’s called affiliate marketing.
You recommend stuff (usual tools) you use.
And when someone uses your recommendation (via a link) to buy products or sign-up for a service, you get a small commission in exchange.
Many top bloggers have built their blogs around affiliate marketing.
So, the main question:
How to get started?
Step #1 Sign-up for all relevant affiliates
For example, say you want to recommend the theme you use for your website.
You’ll find the affiliate program in the footer of their website or simply google it:
There you go. See? It’s that simple.
Sign-up for all relevant affiliates and store all the data in the spreadsheet.
Step #2: Promote your affiliates
The next thing you want to do is to get more people buy via your recommendation.
This you could do via creating blog posts or share on social media (if you have an engaged following)
See how Derek Halpern of SocialTriggers does it:
Really well put. He explains what tool he uses and why.
In fact, you can create separate guides where you can promote your affiliates.
A dedicated Resources & Tools page on your website would be a great tactic too. Check out our Resources page to get inspiration.
Important Point to Note when you’re into affiliate marketing: Whenever you recommend some product to someone, they don’t give a shit about you using it. If you want them to buy that product you have to place it in the minds of your readers’ in such a way that they feel this product (you’re recommending) will genuinely help them. This feat can be achieved by sharing success stories. How users of that particular product or service have thrived using it.
Become a YouTube Star
YouTube is another great way to make money online.
Like any other stream of income that requires a lot of hard work so does monetizing your YouTube videos.
Although, it’s not just about monetizing your YouTube channel using Ads but building your brand through your videos.
And getting leads and potential customers for your business.
Check out what the COO of The Young Turks has to say about earning revenue through YouTube:
Steven is damn right.
At the start, it has to be about creating useful content that’ll resonate with people.
Build Your Audience and then you can think about monetization.
Here’s an article you can check out about the YouTube rich list. (HINT: Check out their no. of subscribers, and start building your audience).
To get started check out this course CreatorAcademy has put together: Make Money with YouTube.
Become a Paid Translator on translate.com
Know multiple languages? How about getting paid for that?
Translate.com has a huge community of customers, who’re ready to pay whatever it takes to get their work translated in as many languages as possible.
And to make this easily accessible, translate.com is growing a huge community of paid translators as they believe:
“Some Translations Need a Human Touch”
To encash your earnings you’ll need a PayPal account.
Earn Money by lending in a Peer-to-Peer fashion
Prosper.com makes it possible for you to invest into personal loans listed.
According to Prosper, you can earn estimated returns of 8.04% average.
Nick Loper from SideHustleNation has been a Prosper lender for the past five years and here’s what he says about it:
“My experiment with peer-to-peer lending at Prosper.com continues, and it’s turned into a consistent cash flow month after month”
You can check out a detailed post he’s written about his investment at prosper.com here.
LendingClub: Similar to prospect, LendingClub is another big US-based, peer-to-peer lending platform.
Zopa: a Similar peer-to-peer lending platform based in the UK.
Note: Make sure you read all the terms and conditions before you invest any money. On these platforms, there is no guaranteed return and you may even lose all of your principal investment. Talk to your financial advisor, before investing.
Over to You:
There are hundreds of ways and thousands of sources of making money online.
You have to keep looking, start implementing and stick to what works.
Some of these ways require more work and a lot of dedication (but, hey, they come with more returns too) like Blogging.
Others, like PTC sites, taking surveys require not much of using your brain and could be done an hour or two per day while watching TV.
So, what do you think?
Which strategies will you start implementing right away?
Or… Have you got something I haven’t mentioned?
